This type of treatment, known broadly as “breast implant revision,” can be performed for a variety of reasons. Most often, patients want to switch from one implant type or size to another, a technique referred to as a “breast implant exchange,” or they want to address the effects that aging, weight fluctuations, or hormonal changes have had on their implants. Much more rarely, breast revision surgery may be necessary to reduce adverse complications.

What Does Breast Revision Surgery Entail?

As breast revision is a highly customizable surgery, the specifics of the procedure can vary between patients. Generally, Dr. DiBello is able to remove and/or reposition the current implant through its initial incision, though additional incisions may be needed to create a new pocket if the implant is being exchanged. Just as in an augmentation surgery, he can strategically place the incisions so scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Eligible patients may also desire a breast lift or another breast enhancement surgery to comprehensively contour their revised bustline.

What Can I Expect in My Recovery from Breast Revision Surgery?

Recovery from breast revision surgery often differs very little from that of breast augmentation, so the process should be fairly familiar. You may experience swelling, bruising, or mild to moderate discomfort as you heal, but this should dissipate in the weeks following surgery. Some patients will be prescribed pain medications or directed to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. You will be advised to refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity for the first few weeks, but you should be able to return to your daily activities within one to two weeks.
