Breast Implant Revision

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

While breast augmentation with implants  is one of the most widely performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide, many patients do not realize that this procedure is highly complicated and nuanced. As such, even patients who were satisfied with their original results sometimes desire another surgery to improve the results of their augmentation. This type of treatment, known broadly as “breast implant revision,” can be performed for a variety of reasons. Most often, patients want to switch from one implant type or size to another, a technique referred to as a “breast implant exchange,” or they want to address the effects that aging, weight fluctuations, or hormonal changes have had on their implants. Much more rarely, breast revision surgery may be necessary to reduce adverse complications.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Joseph DiBello, MD, FACS, personalizes each breast revision to meet the patient’s individual needs and suit their anatomy. This procedure is considered much more complicated than the initial placement of implants, which means you should only trust an experienced surgeon to perform the surgery.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Revision Surgery?

You may be a candidate for breast revision surgery if you:

  • Would like to change to a different implant size or type
  • Are interested in altering the appearance, position, or shape of your implants
  • Wish to correct unsatisfactory results from a previous augmentation
  • Are suffering from a rupture, leak, or capsular contracture (an abnormal hardening of tissue surrounding the implant)
  • Would like to remove your implants entirely

Furthermore, the ideal candidate for breast revision should be in relatively good health and have realistic expectations for this surgery. The best way to determine your candidacy is to meet with Dr. DiBello for a one-on-one consultation. He can evaluate your concerns and determine whether a revision is the best course of action for you.

What Does Breast Revision Surgery Entail?

As breast revision is a highly customizable surgery, the specifics of the procedure can vary between patients. Generally, Dr. DiBello is able to remove and/or reposition the current implant through its initial incision, though additional incisions may be needed to create a new pocket if the implant is being exchanged. Just as in an augmentation surgery, he can strategically place the incisions so scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Eligible patients may also desire a breast lift or another breast enhancement surgery to comprehensively contour their revised bustline.

What Can I Expect in My Recovery from Breast Revision Surgery?

Recovery from breast revision surgery often differs very little from that of breast augmentation, so the process should be fairly familiar. You may experience swelling, bruising, or mild to moderate discomfort as you heal, but this should dissipate in the weeks following surgery. Some patients will be prescribed pain medications or directed to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. You will be advised to refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity for the first few weeks, but you should be able to return to your daily activities within one to two weeks. Dr. DiBello will provide personalized instructions to help you have a safe, quick recovery.

How Much Does Breast Implant Revision Cost?

In general, the cost of breast implant revision at DiBello Plastic Surgery ranges from $6,000 to $8,500; however, the price is contingent upon several variables, which can include:

  • The type of implants being removed and/or replaced
  • New implants, if applicable
  • Techniques utilized (lift, capsulectomy, etc)
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Hospital stays
  • Post-operative care

During your consultation, Dr. DiBello will go over all expenses which pertain to you in order to come up with a concrete price.
